VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol phones

Sorry for the jargon but using 'VOIP' really lets you unlock the power of your PC to bring down you telephone calls.

  • Calls to other Internet Phone users are free
  • Calls to UK and other countries are very very cheap - you pay only the cost of the local call in the destination country
  • Calls to mobiles anywhere in the world are very much cheaper than direct dialing
  • Voicemail
  • Text Messaging
  • Multiple Phone numbers - keep your home & business calls separate
  • Video Calling
  • Call Forwarding to landline or mobile phone

How it Works

  1. You must install the software for the service you are using. If you have purchased a computer from KIM Computers you will already have installed. If not you can click the Skype logo to download it now.
  2. The first time you use Skype you will need to create an account. This is the name people will see when you telephone them.
  3. Follow the instructions to add your friends to your address book. You can upload all your MS Outlook/Express contacts if you wish.
  4. Once a number is in your address book simply click on it to dial the person.

Equipment Needed

Internet Phone HeadsetInternet Phone HeadsetTo use skype will need either a headset or a voip telephone.

The headset is cheapest but will mean you will have to sit by the PC to make your calls.

The voip telephone is more convenient. This looks just like a normal cordless phone. Choose one that has the features you want e.g.) Address book, last number redial etc. It really does not matter which phone you buy - just check that it is compatible with the voip service you are using. You may install a web cam if you wish so that people can see you when you call. This facility can be switched off anytime you want to.

The first time you want to make calls to an ordinary land line or a mobile you will need to prepay a charge (usually £10). You will see the balance reducing as your call goes on. Click here to see the Skype rates.
